The List

Slice of Life Challenge
Please join the challenge over at Two Writing Teachers!

A very personal slice for me today...which means I'm making myself vulnerable. Ooohhh, this is scary...but, here goes...

It's a poem about advice given to me.

Make a list of qualities you're looking for in a man.

I wrote this...it's a draft, a beginning, a vision...

My list

Who are you?

Kind eyes
Strong hands,
Taller than me,
Mischievous smile,
Contagious laugh

Please &thank-you,
Tell me about your day,
Guess what?
I’ve always dreamed of…

Talk and talk and talk-

Intertwining fingers,
Kneeling to pray,
Calmly breathing close to me,
Awakening my spirit…

Nickname giver,
Walker of dog,
Problem solver (not mine, his),
Concert & theater-goer,
Hand holder…

Faith filled,
Forgiving,
Not perfect-
Flawed,
Perfect for me...

I'm looking for...
The man who-
just by being him,
will help me
be the best version of
me

  1. Of course your initial disclaimer that I might not want to read this made me zoom in here! I love how you captured not only who you are but how you also seek others who support and can help you realize your dreams. Isn't that the most human of characteristics?

  2. I hope love comes your way, like some flower on an unexpected wind, Michelle.

  3. Your last line is startling. I think it's the most important one. You're the best version of you right now, but someone with whom you can share a life and make each other better is so important to a relationship. Thank you for being willing to share your poem. That's the most important part of writing!

  4. Thank you for being vulnerable.
By doing that you have made a connection with me in that I know someone who has similar hopes and dreams as me.

  7. Good Luck Michelle. I always wanted a guy taller than I am and never found one. I gave up on that one and settled for other things on my list :)

  10. Perfect for me...love that line! As long as you are open...and continue to take risks...who knows what doors will open for you. He has a plan...just continue to be patient and pray.

  11. You just sent your dream to the universe. I hope the universe responds. May-be the answer won't be tall nor like dogs, but he may still be perfect for you. It certainly took courage to share this. I appreciate that you trusted your readers.

  12. Beautiful list. Many years ago I remember praying to God that I would meet some one who would love me for me (flaws included!) and He did. Continue to pray.

  13. I Loved your list. Being vulnerable is brave and empowering. I do believe that putting that awesome list out there and leaving it in God's hands will draw that man to you. I did that after my divorce - wrote a long list of the qualities I had to have if I was ever to marry again (which I doubted!). I did not expect to find someone like that (with many of the qualities you listed). But several years later, when I had married my now husband, I found the list and all but one of the items I had listed were there. Bill is not taller than me - we see eye to eye!

  15. Michelle, this is a wonderful poem/prayer. One day that Mr. Right will come into your life and will accept you for who you are - a beautiful, talented woman. As my Michelle said (see above), God sent her a special someone, so keep praying.
