It's Official...I'm an Ambivert

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers.

For most of my life, I would describe myself as an extrovert. I believed an extrovert was someone who was outgoing and talkative...loud. That's me. Recently, I've come to discover I have some tendencies of an introvert. Susan Cain wrote a remarkable book called, Quiet, and I recognized that I have some qualities of an introvert. Here's how an introvert is described in the book...
Me! Me! Me! I used to think the only qualities of an introvert were quiet and shy, and that's not so. Now, I understand it as where I get my energy from...from large group of people or when I'm alone.

After teaching all day, quiet is perfect. It calms me and quiets my mind. That's not to say that I don't have qualities of an extrovert...
I don't get bored or restless, but I do think that I am a go-getter and I like speaking with others. There's a personality quiz that I took. It declared that I am an AMBIVERT. I possess qualities of both...
Are you an introvert or an extrovert or are you an ambivert?

  1. Wow.
Never ever would have described myself as an extrovert, but based on that definition.....I can see some characteristics as well. Guess I'm an ambivert too!

  3. Love this slice! I always thought that I was an extrovert, but now I think that I have both qualities in me too. This is a book that I've been wanting to read!

  4. I too read QUIET and loved it. I am an introvert, there's no doubt about it. I love your "meet me in the middle" ambivert. Out of all the personality tests I've taken that one is new to me.

  6. Michelle, I woke to your quiz. This was a fun questionnaire that led me to the realization that I am an ambivert too. Interesting.

  7. I could have told you that! I'm a total introvert. Social scenes make me sweat. I like to be alone. I have also been interested in the Enneagram. Do you know about it? It's more of a spiritual understanding of your personality. There are 9 numbers and they interact in interesting ways. There's an Enneagram Institute website. You should look into it if you enjoy figuring out how people tick.

  8. Me too! And it's powerful to know that. Instead of just passing it off as crabby, that feeling is a sign that I need to be quiet for awhile. Quiet was an empowering read for me and as an educator.

  9. I've often considered myself an ambivert as well. I love the ideas and charge that other people bring to me, but I need time alone to process and breath without someone watching me.

  10. Introvert - most definitely! It was while reading Quiet that I finally really understood myself as an introvert and why I do the things I do and why I need things the way they are.

  11. I just finished Daniel Pink's book To Sell is Human and he defines ambient - first time I'd heard the word and now you are the 2nd! I'm definitely an ambient, but leaning toward introvert!

  12. Love this Michelle! I always blamed the fact that I was a Gemini on the reason that I could sometimes be an introvert and sometimes an extrovert. YAY! New Learning!

  13. Oh you didn't have to take that quiz, I could have told you. You are the best of both worlds. I wonder if there is a high percentage of teacher friends and slicers that could sit in the middle of that spectrum? Thoughtful about their work, yet able to reach out and engage. I tend toward the introvert side. I love it when I'm with like souls but have a hard time with those I don't know.

  14. My book club just finished Quiet, so interesting, & it is more complicated than I thought. I've taken the Myers-Briggs, fell right in the middle, although I think I am really an introvert, Michelle. The psychologist who gave the test to the staff said that adults can change behavior out of need, like teachers who must become extroverted in their work. I'll come back & take your test, to see what happens. Really love what you shared.

  15. So interesting to see how many have read the book, Quiet. It made our book club list for next year. I was subbing when a couple of weeks ago when the WOW (word of the week) was extrovert/introvert. I love talking with students about the words, having them think they are a little of each and then leading them to the word ambivert after we take apart the word ambidextrous. It's a great discovery and then I tell them to go home and share with mom and dad. I've always thought of myself as an extrovert, but I definitely have some of the qualities of an introvert also.

  17. I can't wait to take this quiz. I am guessing by what you wrote and what the definitions of the different personalities are, that I will be like you, which is right in the middle. I never thought of myself as an introvert, but after reading over what it says, I think I might have some of those qualities... oh and for sure the wine!!! :) I'm going to take the quiz to see!

  18. Just based on the descriptions, I would say I'm definitely an introvert, which I think I would agree I always thought I was. Or maybe ambivert. Are there degrees of introverts?? I feel like I know introverts that are REALLY introverted. I know I'm not quite like that. I'll have to take the quiz.
